Goal Setting Is Not Only Once-A-Day Affair

In my last post, I mentioned that we should set goal clearly and do it daily. Now, the question is, when is the best time in a day? Of course, the answer is in the morning. However, it should not be just anytime in the morning; it should be first thing in the morning! Yes! The first thing when you wake up, instead of brushing your teeth, you should rush to your desk, and start writing your daily goal!

I mentioned in my other posting that there are long-term goal and short-term goal (which for me I called it as daily goal). It is this daily goal that you need to write down everyday! It is important so that you are aware of your daily activities are geared and swift towards it. On top, in the morning, when you just awake, your Alpha wave is at its most active period and according to many scientists’ researches, Alpha wave is presence when a person is engaging into his superb learning mode!

Have you ever experienced, when you were young (or maybe you still doing it now), rushing to study as much as possible only at the night just before a test or examination, trying to utilise and grasp as much as you could; and unfortunately, those you studied earlier, usually tend to be forgotten and seems that they were never ever be a way to register in your mind, however, those that you had studied while you were almost dozed off, surprisingly, can be recalled easily during the exam! Did you ever asked yourself, did I really come across this subject? Why is it so? The answer is because of Alpha wave, which begin to sync in just when you doze off!

What I’m drifting here, it is important to write down your goal in the first thing in the morning, so that you can leverage on your morning Alpha wave which present in your just awaken brain so that you can subconsciously register it and deeply root it into your brain.

Alpha wave also present during at night just before you doze off. So you should also write down your daily goal at night, just before you turn for the bed! This action not only help you to review your day time activities if it gel with your daily goal, but also, help you to register again better, leveraging again on the alpha wave to sink into yourself about your daily goal!

Goal setting is like sharpening a knife. The more you sharpened it, the sharper it will be! Thus, best time to set goal is in the morning, first thing in the morning. And for best result, set again just before you doze off!

Try it! You will be amazed of the result and your goals begin to fall in place. You will be more aware of your behavior towards your daily activities. If it does not work, it’s OK! You will not lose anything! But what if it works? You are in no lost situation! So, just do it!

On a piece of paper, draw a large circle. In the center of the circle, draw a very small circle. Next, draw 6 straight lines from the small circle to the large circle, like spokes on a bicycle wheel.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 is the lowest and 10 the highest) ask yourself how satisfied you are with your current position in regards to; financial and career, social and cultural, spiritual and ethical, family and home, mental and educational and physical and health.

Take into account the following personal goal setting issues:

Financial and Career
Do you enjoy your work? Do you feel you are making a contribution to society? Are you living up to your potential? Have you achieved a satisfactory standard of living?

Social and Cultural
Does your circle of friends enhance your life and contribute to your sense of contentment and well-being? Is there at least one other person you can discuss important life issues with? Do you have interests outside of your career and family (sports, theater, outdoor events)?

Spiritual and Ethical
Have you identified your specific personal values? Are you living up to those personal values? Is religion important to you? If so, are you happy with the way you are practicing your religion? If its not, what is your relationship with a higher power or with the universe in general?

Family and Home
Have you realized your dream in terms of your home and family relationships?

Mental and Educational
Did you accomplish the educational goals you set for yourself? Are you still growing and learning? Do you invest in your continuing education on a regular basis?

Physical and Health
Are you satisfied with your current level of physical health? Are you living up to your own standards in terms of diet and exercise? Are you fit enough to do the things you want to do?

Next record your answers by putting a mark on each spoke under the respective categories. Assign the innermost notch on the wheel a value of one, and the outer ring a value of ten. After you have marked all of the spokes, connect your marks, creating your own “wheel.” Congratulations to those whose wheel is round and hugs the outer edge of the figure. Chances are that you are reasonably happy and are living a fairly balanced life. However, any other shaped/configured wheel suggests room for growth.

For example, if your circle is lopsided, the low score(s) identify the area(s) in which you need to focus your personal goal-setting efforts. If your wheel is round but small, that’s okay. Your life is in balance you just need to set goals in all areas of your life in order to expand your wheel and achieve greater general satisfaction.

Repeat this process on a regular basis until your wheel meets your own standard of success. However, don’t stop there. Life doesn’t stand still. If you not moving forward then you’re loosing ground. Stretch your personal goal setting. Get out of your comfort zone and set new and challenging goals.

WHY MOST GOAL SETTING IS A WASTE OF TIME
(And what you can do about it.)
Research (Damon Burton, 1983) that has shown that those that set goals are happier, more confident and less stressed. Individuals that successfully identify clear, meaningful goals, and design a plan with the necessary support, can accomplish amazing things.
Unfortunately, for far too many people goal setting is a waste of time, because it simply does not work. There are many reasons for this, including:
·We set goals that don’t have the power to inspire us, so we simply don’t follow through. This often happens when we let others (parents, partners, society, etc.) set our goals.

·We set goals without specifics. (An intention to lose weight or change careers is not a plan that will translate into successfully achieving your goal.)

·We lack the necessary support structure to reinforce the new behavior needed to accomplish the goals. (Intention alone does not change behavior. It is through an ongoing structure of support and accountability that we grow, change our behavior and accomplish new goals.)
If you are serious about making some powerful changes, and want to set achievable goals that are truly meaningful to you, here are some guidelines:

1.Create Space – Meaningful goals require change. Change requires time, effort, attention and growth. If you are already running at 100% capacity, you will not have the time or energy needed. Let go of enough non-essential tasks to create the space you need to sustain change.

2.Get Clear On What Is Important To You – Before you invest in committing to a significant goal, take some time to get clear on what is really important to you. For example, you might think you want a promotion, but if that promotion will take you further away from your family, the promotion may not be in alignment with what you really value. When you know what is truly important to you, it is easy to create goals for yourself that will result in far more fulfillment.

3.Generate A Plan with Specific Goals- Once you have a clear vision of what you are working towards, break it into smaller, more manageable stages and prioritize them. Don’t try to do too much all at once and make sure to be specific. (I want to get in shape is a weak and non-specific goal. I commit to go for 3 thirty-minute runs a week, is a clear, tangible goal.)

4.Leverage Your Strengths – When you go about pursuing goals, it is important to know what your strengths are, and build on them. Collectively we focus far too much energy on our weaknesses and shortcomings (which make us feel powerless) rather than focusing on the strengths and talents that empower us.

5.Keep Focused – It is the intensity and frequency of our attention that reinforces the new perspectives and thought patterns that support our new behaviors. Do not try to make major changes all by yourself. Create a strong support structure around you that will keep you on track, accountable, and moving forward past all the inevitable challenges.

Solutions may include a visit to a doctor or psychiatrist to control your emotions, changing the people you hang around with, or changing your environment so that they are all conducive to obtaining your desired goals.

Careers are made by good time management practice and working towards established goals. Failing in a career is often attributed to bad time management. Careers require a lot from an individual which often makes the career the life of the individual. Plan how far you want to go into your career and maintain goals to help you reach the level of success you wish to achieve.

Education is paramount in achieving your goals. If your goals require you to have a certain kind of degree, or require a certain specialization, or demand a certain skill to be developed, make plans for receiving the appropriate education.

Also, your family should never be left out of your plans. If you are just starting out then you have to decide if you want to be a parent or when you want to be a parent if you aren’t one already. You also have to know if you really would be a good parent and how well you could relate to extended family members.

Personal financial situations also play a major role in achieving your goals. Have a realistic goal on how much you really want to earn. Make it a specific number, not an estimate or a range of numbers. You must be able to create plans or stages by which you will be able to reach your earning potential.

Physically gifted individuals may be able to achieve sports related goals like being in the National Basketball association or National Football League. Determining your physical capabilities should be one of your priorities. Physical limitations could however be conquered with proper planning and goal setting.

As the saying goes -’All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, or something to that effect, is by all means true down to the last the letter. Giving yourself a little pleasure should be included into your plans. You will drive yourself into the dirt if you just work, work, work and do nothing else. Rest and relaxation is a requirement and time should be set aside weekly to refresh your mind and give it a break.

To start achieving your lifetime goals, set a quarter of a century plan, then break it down to 5 year plans then break it down again to 1 year plans, then 6 month plans then monthly plans, then weekly, then daily. This gives you long term, mid-range and short term goals to aim for.

Use a planner and schedule your time for the entire week every Sunday. Sunday is a day off for me but I take the 30 to 60 minutes it takes to plan out my entire upcoming week. That way on Monday morning I can get right to work! First, list your projects or tasks that need to be completed, and then prioritize them according to importance. What will make the most impact on your life or business? These would be the top priorities, and so on down to the lowest priority. Next, you will schedule out your week on the planner pages. As you go through the week, make sure that each day, you complete your priority tasks FIRST before moving on to another task. You will see great improvements in the amount of meaningful work you get done throughout the week and how far you get working towards your ultimate goals.

Remember, as Jim Rohn states, ‘The major purpose of a goal is NOT the achievement of the goal, the achievement of the goal is secondary. The major purpose of a goal is what you become in the pursuit of it.’

If you want to pursue a higher goal after attaining an initial one, then go for it. After reaching the ceiling, you can now start to aim for the sky. 5. Think of your goals over and over. Doing so would enable you to perform a simple reality check. Check on yourself, the situation, the available resources, your skills and the overall backdrop. When you think about the title and realize that most people have no idea where they’re going or what they want. It’s really sad. Our minds are goal seeking computers. Just give it a specific goal and it will work to complete it. However, all most people have is vague wandering thoughts of what they want. They’ve never written their thoughts down in a coherent manner.

If you send a message to a friend you don’t write the words down in whatever order and expect them to figure out what it says. Why do we do it to ourselves with what we want out of life?

It’s your job to write down on paper how you want to live.

Get out a piece of paper and start with your top 100 goals. Start writing a list of the things you want to accomplish in your life. I mean anything you can imagine, learning a language, taking a trip, meeting a famous or not so famous person. Write on that list everything from the littlest thing like brushing your teeth twice a day to flying in the space shuttle.

Keep making the list until you reach 100, however, don’t stop there. Carry the list with you and continue to write down more goals as you think of them. It may take several hours or days to complete this list. However, it’s essential that you do it.

Goal Setting Tip #2: Let’s get specific

The second goal setting tip, get specific about the things that you want. Take your top 100 list and start with the easiest ones and write a more specific description of what you want. If it’s a car, what make and model, what color, leather or cloth seats. If it’s a trip, where are you going, how will you get there and what will you see. If it’s money, be specific. How much, why do you want it and what will you do with it when you get it. Remember, BE SPECIFIC!

Goal Setting Tip #3: It’s in the want to, you’ll find the how to.

Now let’s discover the key to successful goal setting. Why do you want it? Think about and write on paper why you want each of the dreams on your Top 100 list. Get specific and dig deep to the emotions and feelings that are behind each one. It’s in this step you’ll find which ones you truly are willing to pay the price to get and which ones are not really important.
